Keto is a way of life. Ketosis is a state in which your body uses stored fats as its primary energy source.

Your body enters into a state of ketosis when it doesn’t have enough glucose from carbohydrates to burn for energy. Instead, your body begins to burn stored fats.

This process is called ketosis. It’s also commonly referred to as “being in keto” or “in a state of ketosis.”

Your blood sugar level is maintained via ingesting carbohydrates. Glucose, which has the simplest molecular structure of all carbs, affects blood sugar most significantly.

Why is keto good for you?

Keto helps your body burn stored fats rather than carbohydrates for energy and fuel. This state of burning fat can help you lose weight, and it also has several other benefits:

  1. the process stabilizes the release of insulin
  2. triglyceride levels decrease
  3. HDL cholesterol (the “good” kind) increases
  4. your brain function improves.

Additionally, keto allows you to reach and maintain ketosis much more quickly than traditional diets. You can even get the benefits of fasting without losing muscle mass.

This is because once you enter ketosis, your appetite decreases significantly while your energy level spikes.

Keto has many healing benefits as well. For example, keto can treat epilepsy, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes.

It may also decrease symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease, avoid the harmful effects of aging, and prevent metabolic syndrome.

How do you get into ketosis?

There are several ways to enter ketosis, most of which involve depleting your glycogen (which stores glucose) more rapidly than on a standard diet.

Your body creates fuel from the glucose stored in your muscles and liver for energy.

A carb-heavy meal can refill these supplies quickly, so you’ll need to stop eating carbs or severely limit them.

Glycogen is the net result of carbohydrates stored in your body. Seeing as how there are four calories per gram of carbohydrate, this glycogen creates a total of 1600 calories which you must burn off before entering ketosis.

How long does it take to get into ketosis?

Most people can achieve ketosis within a few days of drastically limiting their carbohydrate intake.

This means shifting to 20 grams or less per day. You can also achieve this state by fasting or following the SKD (specific ketogenic diet) for a couple of days.

How long does it take for keto supplements to work?

Some supplements claim to work instantly. These are usually ketone salts or esters. While these may give you a quick boost when transitioning into ketosis, they will not yield long-term results if you don’t make any dietary changes.

Your body will quickly adapt to using the ketones in your blood for energy instead of glucose, rendering this supplement useless.

Conclusion

Ketosis is a natural process in which your body uses stored energy (fat) for fuel. It has many benefits, including weight loss and improved brain function.

You can reach ketosis by limiting your carbohydrate intake, fasting, or following the SKD.

Some supplements can help you get into ketosis more quickly; however, it’s not sustainable to use them long-term without making dietary changes that get you at least partially into this metabolic state.
